Short answer: if two wearables disagree about how long you slept, it's almost always because one is reporting Time in Bed and the other is reporting Total Sleep Time. They are not the same number, and the gap between them is one of the most useful things your body can tell you.
Time in Bed vs. Total Sleep Time
Time in Bed (TIB) is the whole window from when you lay down to when you got up. Total Sleep Time (TST) is only the minutes you were actually asleep — deep, light and REM — with the awake minutes removed.
Say you were in bed for nine hours but genuinely asleep for six. A tracker that reports TIB will proudly say “9 hours.” A tracker that reports TST will say “6 hours” — and it's the honest one.
The number that actually matters: sleep efficiency
Sleep efficiency = Total Sleep Time ÷ Time in Bed. In our example that's 6 ÷ 9 = about 67%. Anything consistently under ~85% is a sign your sleep is fragmented — you're spending a lot of the night awake in bed. That's the signal a “9 hours, great job!” readout hides from you.
Why EXO reports it this way
EXO surfaces your Total Sleep Time, your Time in Bed, and your sleep efficiency — plus your stages and a sleep-apnea risk signal on supported devices — so a rough night reads like a rough night, not a participation trophy. The point of the EXO Loop is proof, and honest sleep is where a lot of your recovery, readiness and training either come from or fall apart.
What to do with it
- Low efficiency, enough time in bed? The problem isn't duration — it's fragmentation. Look at caffeine timing, alcohol, room temperature and a consistent wind-down.
- Low TST and low TIB? You're simply not giving yourself the window. Protect the schedule first.
- Watch the trend, not one night. One bad night is noise; a two-week slide in efficiency is a message.
A good sleep score should make you trust it on the mornings you feel terrible. If it only ever tells you good news, it isn't measuring sleep — it's measuring the clock.
