EMS

What is EMS training — and does it actually work?

Short answer: EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) training sends small electrical impulses to your muscles so they contract harder and more completely than you can on your own. Paired with movement, it lets you get a demanding full-body session in about 20 minutes.

How EMS works

Your brain already fires your muscles with electrical signals. An EMS suit adds a controlled external signal on top, recruiting more motor units — including deep fibers that are hard to reach voluntarily. The result is a higher level of muscle activation for the same movement, which is why a short EMS session can feel like a much longer workout.

Does it actually work?

Research on whole-body EMS shows it can meaningfully increase muscle activation versus voluntary contraction alone, and studies have reported gains in strength and body composition when EMS is programmed well and paired with training. As with anything, the dose matters: too much, too often isn't better — it's just more fatigue.

What makes EXO different

Most EMS suits run the same fixed program every time. The OHM EMS V3, powered by EXO, is the only EMS that lives inside a send-and-receive loop:

  • It reads your recovery first. When you're primed, EXO prescribes a strength dose; when your body is asking to restore, it shifts to a low, breath-led recovery frequency.
  • It doses per muscle. Twenty-plus independently controlled zones, matched to the modality you actually need today — strength, fat burn, cardio or recovery.
  • It proves what changed. Every session closes with the Time-Map: your heart rate over per-muscle drive, prescribed vs. delivered. No other EMS can draw it.

Is EMS safe?

Whole-body EMS is intense; start conservatively, hydrate, and don't stack it with maximal training every day. It isn't recommended for people who are pregnant or who have certain medical devices or conditions — if that's you, talk to a professional first. EXO's recovery-aware dosing exists precisely so the intensity matches your readiness instead of blindly maxing out.

Done right, EMS isn't a gimmick — it's leverage. EXO's job is to make sure that leverage is pointed at the right thing on the right day.
